This Before That
When it comes to your roof and gutters, knowing what, how, and why will help you make the best decision right now.

Happy October to you and yours! This is the time of year for all things Fall – burnt orange sweaters, hot apple cider, orchard and pumpkin patch visits, back to school and so much more. Now is a great time to take a good look at your roof and gutters. Why? Being proactive is always better than being forced to be reactive when it comes to your house (and anything in life, really).
This month take a moment to examine your roof ventilation, insulation, and overall condition. These are generally the underlying issues that cause winter ice buildup and ice dams on your roof and gutter line.
Things to check:
- Are the vents clear of debris and in proper working order? If not, you will want to get them cleaned and serviced before the temps drop.
- Is the insulation blanket in the attic space more than 250 mm thick? If not, your house will be in danger of ice dams and other issues associated with freezing, thawing, and refreezing that comes along with winter weather.
- Are there any torn, warped, or missing shingles or flashing edges? If so, it is better to fix and replace them while the leaves are falling rather than the unforgiving snow and ice.
If you manage to check off the boxes of all of the above without incident, but your house still tends to have an issue with ice buildup and ice dams, then it is time to consider heat cables. Some homes have design flaws (poor pitch, for example) and some houses are ice-dam magnets, unfortunately. Heat cable can help you keep trouble spots clear of snow and ice.
At Rainman Seamless Rain Gutters, we recommend that if your ventilation, insulation, and overall condition are in proper working order but an ice dam issue persists, Thermwire heat cables should do the trick. Call us today for an estimate!
