Belly Laughing At Your Gutters
Gutters serve a purpose, but that doesn’t mean they can’t offer a little something more!

Clark Griswold (that’s right, we’re starting this blog with a reference to Christmas Vacation!) showed us just how interesting twinkle light placement can be when working around gutters. He also “taught us everything we need to know about exterior illumination!” This movie is a holiday classic and it makes us laugh out loud whenever gutters are on screen.
Here are the Hollywood movie moments we turned into real-world takeaways:
For starters, you need the right materials to keep your lights in place and your roof, siding, and gutters in their proper working order. Light clips are our recommendation. Forgo the staple gun or traditional metal nail, both of which can rust and leave your eaves and siding with a murky brown patina. Not to mention, using a large wood stapler or hammering a nail into the side of your house on the top of a ladder in less than optimal weather conditions is not recommended! Be safe out there, your roof, your gutters … and your family will thank you.1.Assuming the weather turns icy at some point, which of course in our climate it will, ice builds up in your gutters (unless you have Heat Cables installed!). When this happens, keep an eye on it! You surely don’t want something similar to what happened to Clark, to happen to you. No giant gutter ice rockets are flying through your next-door neighbor’s window and melting into a puddle on their surround sound equipment, no sir!
2.Working on a ladder can be dangerous. Clark got lucky when his ladder pulled away from the house with him on it. A tree placed strategically behind him saved him as he fell. He bumped up against it, and then used it to propel himself, and his ladder, back toward the house. The whole scene added a humorous twist to his already foiled attempt to be cool in the moment, but there’s no guarantee a tree will be there for you! Be sure to bring along a trusted sidekick to help with holiday decorating and any work you do on your roof or gutters (cleaning leaves and debris out of the gutters, for instance).
3.This is a time of year to be thankful and to show those you love the most just how much they mean to you. And by that we mean with your time, not all that commercial stuff! As long as you do your due diligence on your roof and gutters leading up to the holiday, you should be free to enjoy a relaxing “old-fashioned family Christmas!”
