Signs You Need to Upgrade Your Gutter System
Gutters are an important part of your home, so make sure they are in top notch condition.

When was the last time you looked at your gutters? If you're like most people, the answer is “I can't remember.” We don't blame you. Gutters aren't exciting or beautiful. To be honest, they're not even mildly interesting looking.
They are, however, very important to your home. During storms, they dutifully clear water away from your home and keep the foundation safe from damage. That is... until they don't do their job and you have a very expensive repair bill.
How do you know if your gutters need an upgrade before it's too late? Look for these signs.
Gaps or Cracks
No need for a ladder for this one; you can make a visual inspection from the ground. Before a storm, check your gutters for gaps or cracks of any size.
Especially look at gutter seams – the point where separate gutter pieces are joined. Small cracks may not seem problematic. But even a small crack can, over time, leak gallons of water that can damage your home. And during winter, water can freeze and expand the crack, allowing more water to leak when the ice thaws.
When it's raining is a great time to make another visual inspection. You'll easily see leaks. Again, pay close attention to the seams for drips or steady leaking.
Sagging
Gutters should be flat and set flush against the roof. If you notice bowing in the gutter, or any sections pulling away from the house, that could soon be trouble.
Rust
Rust is a good indication water is pooling in the gutters and the metal has decayed. Rusty is a problem because it will eventually allow water to leak.
Standing Water
You'll need a ladder to look into your gutters for this one. Gutters are set at a slight slope, to channel water toward the downspout. After a storm when the weather clears, your gutters should be dry.
Pooling water is an indication your gutters may not be set properly, or some sections sag. This can cause issues when the water freezes and damages the gutters and seams.Mildew or Mold
Look for signs of mild or mildew on the side of the house. This indicates your gutters may be leaking and not channeling water away from the house. See if there are gutter seams near the moldy area. Seams are a common place for leaks.
As they sit quietly on the edge of the roof, gutters protect your home investment through storm after storm. Before this winter gets fully underway, give some attention to this overlooked equipment. If you notice any of the signs listed above, call us for a free local estimate.
