How to Keep Insects Out of My Gutters
Insects can make themselves at home anywhere. One place that you might not think of is the gutters.

The purpose of gutters is to catch rainwater and direct it away from your roof. Gutters can begin to backup when leaves, twigs and other debris collect inside them making them less effective. Standing water creates an ideal breeding ground for insects and keeps insect eggs and larvae hidden from predators. As leaves or twigs sit in the standing water of a clogged gutter, they begin to ferment. When this happens, it is like putting out the welcome mat.
Once mosquitoes find standing water within clogged gutters, adults lay up to 200 eggs at a time hatching into larva within 48 hours. Water pooling in gutters is generally undisturbed, allowing the life cycle of a mosquito to continue rapidly.
In addition to mosquitoes, multiple other pests such as carpenter ants , termites , centipedes, millipedes, and stinging insects including wasps thrive in gutters. Most pests prefer moist areas where they are generally left alone without the threat of predators.
This damp environment of your clogged gutter could also be attracting other stinging insects. Bees, wasps, and hornets can build their hives that physically weigh down gutters as well as become dangerous and difficult to remove.
Proper maintenance and cleaning of your gutters will help get rid of decaying leaves and the moist environment is the best way to prevent bugs from making themselves at home. Keeping your rain gutters free and flowing is a wonderful way to get rid of this hatching environment which will help reduce the number of insects around your backyard.
