How to Clean Your Rain Gutters - and Keep Them Clean!
Regular rain gutter cleaning protects your home from hazardous water damage to the roof and foundation.

Regular rain gutter cleaning protects your home from hazardous water damage to the roof and foundation. When gutters become clogged with debris or snow, water builds up and can spill over the side, where it fails to drain away from the home via its regular downspouts. Water can also back up under the roof, causing wetness to fascia boards under the roof, and even to the attic and inside the walls of the home. While many experts recommend cleaning rain gutters at least twice a year, Rainman Gutters has additional proactive tips you can use to keep your gutters free of obstructions.
Cleaning Gutters
Cleaning your gutters is a relatively straightforward process as long as you can safely and comfortably get on a ladder. For your convenience, Rainman also offers our Clear Gutter Professional Maintenance Program, a comprehensive annual maintenance program that includes gutter cleaning, checking for leaks and damage, and more.
Steps to cleaning your own gutters include:
- Firmly securing your ladder on the ground.
- Wearing gloves, remove large debris like leaves and sticks by hand.
- For smaller debris, such as dirt and shingle granules, use a trowel to scoop away.
- Rinse with hose towards the downspout.
- On the ground, snake a running hose up downspout to wash away clogs and debris.
- If you have leaky seams (note: Rainman Gutters specializes in seamless rain gutters--say goodbye to caulking!), seal them with gutter caulk.
- Tighten or replace any loose and missing screws.
Keeping Gutters Clean
In addition to regular inspection and cleaning, there are several additions we offer at Rainman that keep the water flowing as it should:
- Leaf and Needle Protection: we can seal your gutters so that leaves and needles remain on top, while water drains through and moves along as it should. As the debris on top of your gutters dries out, wind will remove it for you.
- Heat Cables: we offer two styles that keep snow from backing up your gutters.
- Snowbrakes and Flashing Modifications: Depending on variables such as the pitch of the roof or type of flashing installed, Rainman can install snowbrakes and flashing modifications to decrease snow runoff and increase drainage efficiency.
