Do-It-Yourself Ice Dam Removal
Ice dams will tear off gutters, cause water to pour into your house, and even loosen shingles

Ice dams are the enemy of your roof and gutters during the cold winter season. When heat collects in the attic it warms the roof line, but not the base eaves (near the gutters). The snow melts on the warm roof and then refreezes when it hits those cold eaves. Ice accumulates over time (sometimes within a matter of hours) and forms an ice dam. The heavy ice buildup can tear off your gutters, loosen shingles, or cause water to pour into your house leaving warped floors, stained ceilings, and soggy insulation.
It may seem like a good idea to chip away at an ice dam with a shovel, hammer, or ax, but it’s bad for your roof…and dangerous for you! Salt doesn’t help the issue either. These “fast fixes” will cause you more headaches in the long run.
How do you prevent ice dams? Install a set of heat cables before rough weather hits. If the season is already here, we recommend the following:
1.Pull off snow with a long-handled roof rake to immediately change the temperature of your roof without damaging your shingles
2.Place a box fan in the attic and aim it at the underside of the roof where water is actively leaking to help circulate warm air to the eaves
If an ice dam creeps up on you, tackle it with the two tips above. As for the next winter season, enjoy dam-free winters with a few home improvements like the installation of heat cables or bigger projects like ventilation eaves and ridge vents, added layers of insulation, flashing around chimneys, or the sealing of your homes’ duct work.
