Do I Really Need Gutters On My Home
There are many areas if your home you might choose to downgrade in order to save extra cash; however, skimping on your gutters and downspouts is not one.

Building a new home or undergoing an exterior renovation can be very costly. Finding ways to cut corners to keep your budget in check is a typical part of the construction process. There are many areas you might choose to downgrade to save extra cash; however, skimping on your gutters and downspouts will surely cost you dearly in the future.
Water Damage
Here in the Northwest, our rainy climate can wreak havoc on your Spokane home if it is not properly protected. As water drains from your roof to the ground, if it is not properly channeled and effectively moved away from your home it will create its own path.
Even a small amount of water can cause severe issues for your roof structure, walls and foundation. Your gutter and downspout system is designed to mitigate water away from these areas where it can be safely and effectively reabsorbed into the ground. Additionally, the downspout will move water away from high traffic areas such as sidewalks or driveways where it might refreeze and cause a slip hazard.
Selecting the right system
There are several considerations when selecting a gutter and downspout system for your home. These include the material, size of your property and if you simply need to repair an existing system or require a complete gutter replacement.
- Materials – The most common seamless gutter materials are steel, aluminum or copper. Steel gutter systems are 7x stronger than aluminum for winter strength and are manufactured from the same steel as used on metal roofs and will last a lifetime. Aluminum gutters are a great cost effective alternative but is available in many more colors than steel. Copper gutters come with a higher price tag but are corrosion resistant. Copper gutters will age to a beautiful darker brown patina and also last up to 20 years longer than aluminum or steel before they need replacing when properly maintained. With Rainman, whether you select rainware made of aluminum, steel or copper, if properly installed, it won't rust, leak, or corrode and never needs painting. When properly maintained, your new system should function properly for 20 years or more!
- Property size – The size of your home and distance between downspouts helps us determine if 5” seamless or 6” seamless gutters are required. The size of gutters you will need and the style of your roof for your home will most likely play into the material we recommend. However, do remember that investing in long lasting & well maintained rainware system can add value and protect your home.
- Repairs or brand new – Sometimes your gutters simply need repairs and not a complete overhaul. Contact an expert to help you determine the best course of action for your current gutter system.
