Deck The Halls (and Roof) For the Holidays
The holidays are coming, so here are the five best ways to decorate your home for the holidays without damaging your rain gutters.

Deck the halls … the holidays are already sneaking up on us and if you are anything like us, you’re gearing up for the holiday season with a little light (or heavy) outdoor decorating. From synthetic spider-webbing to twinkle lights, many of us have our go-to decorations to make everything feel festive.
But there can be a downside to decorating your home, and it all has to do with your gutters. To save yourself time, money, and a headache, be sure to follow these tips for keeping your gutters safe while still showing your love for your favorite holiday.
- Take your time! Decorating your home shouldn’t feel
like a race. Be strategic about where you place decorations and how, and then
be just as strategic about removing those decorations when it’s time to
represent another holiday. Never try to go the “easy route” by pulling the cord
of twinkle lights to remove them from your gutters! Trust us … it will turn
difficult in an instant when it causes damage to your gutters.
- Decorate in twos! It’s best to decorate with a
buddy, that way one person can spend time on the roof or ladder and the other
can keep an eye out, hand up materials, tell you to “hang that wreath a little
to the right” and so on!
- Be mindful of the weight of your decorations.
Remember, a rain gutter must support its own weight and water when
precipitation occurs. Any decorations you install or hang from your gutters
will become added weight and could cause damage.
- Install lights properly to prevent damage to your
gutters. Never install lights directly to your rain gutters with nails or
staples! We recommend the use of light clips that hang at the edge of your rain
gutter with a handy hook for lights or other decorations.
- Keep an eye on your gutters, especially during holidays when pranking and other kid-type activities (TP-ing anyone?) may occur. Look in your gutters for any debris and remove it. Be sure to wipe or wash away shaving cream or silly string because if either are left to dry, they can be very difficult to remove and cause clogging in downspouts.
Remember these tips when you take the festive feel of the season outdoors and always keep the safety of those gutters in mind!
